For years he has labored to prove it a sacred right of white men to take negro slaves into the new territories. Can he possibly show that it is less a sacred right to buy them where they can be bought cheapest? And, unquestionably they can be bought cheaper in Africa than in Virginia.

Season 5 (

You’re right that some Republicans have threatened to do the same to Mike Johnson. I think the circumstances are a little bit different here than they were for Kevin McCarthy. The first is that the amount of time it took Republicans to coalesce around a new Speaker last fall after ousting McCarthy, it took several weeks. And there are lots of Republicans who are not eager to revisit that experience.

Following the saga of the wealthy Sanders family and the ongoing power struggles surrounding the family business, last season found members navigating international extortion plots, facing major adversaries, and enveloped in secrets and scandals as only the Sanders could be. And love triangles reached new pinnacles as the stakes grew more dire for everyone involved. New York, NY – December 14, 2022 – Today, ALLBLK, AMC Networks’ popular streaming service for Black TV and film, announced the fifth and final season of popular Daytime Emmy-Nominated series, A House Divided. The captivating conclusion of the scandalous nighttime soap series begins Thursday, January 12, 2022. The House had already voted earlier this year to force the sale of TikTok, but the measure before the House this week provides ByteDance more time to complete a sale before a ban would kick in, extending the deadline from six months in the prior legislation to as long as nearly one year. Republicans on the House Appropriations Committee said that more than a third of that amount would be dedicated to replenishing weapons and ammunition systems for the U.S. military.

Why even a Senator's individual opinion withheld, till after the presidential election? Plainly enough now, the speaking out then would have damaged the "perfectly free" argument upon which the election was to be carried. Mr. Buchanan was elected, and the indorsement, such as it was, secured. The indorsement, however, fell short of a clear popular majority by nearly four hundred thousand votes, and so, perhaps, was not overwhelmingly reliable and satisfactory.

I think he was feeling additional pressure from them to actually bring something to the floor and if he didn’t do it, they might have worked with Democrats to use a different procedural option that went around the speaker to do it. And so, kind of the confluence of those factors I think brought us to where we are today. He has done all in his power to reduce the whole question of slavery to one of a mere right of property; and as such, how can he oppose the foreign slave trade -- how can he refuse that trade in that "property" shall be "perfectly free" -- unless he does it as a protection to the home production? And as the home producers will probably not ask the protection, he will be wholly without a ground of opposition.

US House Passes $95 Billion in Aid to Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan

The president would be authorized to set the terms of the loan to Ukraine and also be given the power to cancel it. Congress could override the cancellation but would have to generate enough votes to override a veto, a high bar considering how the two chambers are so evenly divided. WASHINGTON (AP) — Speaker Mike Johnson has unveiled a long-awaited package of bills that will provide military aid to Ukraine and Israel, replenish U.S. weapons systems and give humanitarian assistance to civilians in Gaza.

FINAL SEASON OF ALLBLK’S LONGEST RUNNING SERIES A HOUSE DIVIDED PREMIERES THURSDAY, JANUARY 12

a house divided

The show’s third season was absolutely packed to the gills with moving episodes, but one of the biggest standouts, in this writer’s opinion, was “The Decider.” The episode’s official page offers the description below. During Uncle Rad and Aunt Frisky’s wedding reception, it is shown that Uncle Stripe and Aunt Trixie are going through some sort of conflict, and it’s not the first time the pair have butted heads either. While the fanbase seems to believe we’re looking at a new episode about the reality of separation/divorce, they might be a little late to the ballgame.

The Ukraine aid will be combined with funding for Israel and Taiwan, for a foreign assistance package totaling $95 billion. And so that’s a really, I think, common dynamic in the contemporary legislative process where we still do see committees working on things. And one of the bigger departures is how those things even that committees work on sometimes get processed on the floor. And then lastly, I think eventually he was starting to feel more and more pressure from the members of his conference who do support additional assistance to Ukraine.

The amount of money dedicated to replenishing Israel’s missile defense systems totals about $4 billion in the House and Senate bills. An additional $2.4 billion for current U.S. military operations in the regions is also the same in both bills. He also noted that the House package includes a requirement for the Biden administration to provide a plan and a strategy to Congress for what it seeks to achieve in Ukraine. The plan would be required within 45 days of the bill being signed into law. House Republicans frequently complain that they have yet to see a strategy from Biden for winning the war.

But Johnson did have to rely on Democratic support at two key places where usually a Speaker does not rely on minority party votes. So, we’ve seen Speaker Johnson in a number of situations use the suspension route to move things that he knows have broad bipartisan support. And so, historically, in kind of recent decades, we’ve seen the suspension process used for things that have brought bipartisan support, things that we would in some cases call mostly symbolic. In some cases, they do make substantive change, but they’re not big, sweeping pieces of legislation. And so, it’s much faster to move them through this alternative process, and they can clear that higher vote threshold.

TikTok has denied assertions that it could be used as a tool of the Chinese government. The company has said it has never shared U.S. user data with Chinese authorities and won’t do so if its asked. The investments to counter China and ensure a strong deterrence in the region come to about $8 billion. The overall amount of money and the investments in the two bills is about the same with a quarter of funds used to replenish weapons and ammunition systems that had been provided to Taiwan. The bill said the report from the administration must be a multiyear plan that spells out “specific and achievable objectives.” It also asked for an estimate of the resources required to achieve the U.S. objectives and a description of the national security implications if the objectives are not met. The main difference between the two packages is that the House bill provides more than $9 billion in economic assistance to Ukraine in the form of “forgivable loans.” The Senate bill included no such provision seeking repayment.

So, in the Rules Committee, the rule for these measures got nine votes. And it’s been pretty clear for a while that all four parts of this package, this foreign assistance package that moved last week, particularly the part that provides additional assistance to Ukraine, which has been kind of the longest simmering piece of the four, that the votes were there for the substance. All four components of this package got more than 300 votes on the floor ultimately of the 430 something current members of the House with the current roster of vacancies.

The people were to be left "perfectly free" "subject only to the Constitution." What the Constitution had to do with it, outsiders could not then see. Plainly enough now, it was an exactly fitted niche, for the Dred Scott decision to afterward come in, and declare the perfect freedom of the people, to be just no freedom at all. The several points of the Dred Scott decision, in connection with Senator Douglas' "care-not" policy, constitute the piece of machinery, in its present state of advancement. Either the opponents of slavery, will arrest the further spread of it, and place it where the public mind shall rest in the belief that it is in the course of ultimate extinction; or its advocates will push it forward, till it shall become alike lawful in all the States, old as well as new -- North as well as South. If you’ve been a part of the Heeler clan for the past three seasons, you’ll undoubtedly know that Bluey is practically infamous for taking on a litany of complex and mature subjects for a show meant primarily for children. While that’s easily one of the show’s biggest selling points, a light and peppy episode about playing pretend can come with a cold splash of reality (we’re talking about you, “Copycat”).

But it didn’t have a sort of hard deadline in the way that some of the other things that we’ve seen Congress work on this year did. So, thinking about things like the series of measures that the House and the Senate worked through over the past several months to keep the U.S. government funded. If they hadn’t acted on those, operations at federal agencies would have temporarily ceased. And so that, there was an action forcing mechanism in the form of a firm date. Before and now after the vote, Speaker Mike Johnson, Republican from Louisiana, faces a challenge to his speakership from the right flank of the House GOP, a potential repeat of last year’s ouster of Speaker Kevin McCarthy. Here to talk about the process of how this all played out and what to look for next is Molly Reynolds, senior fellow in Governance Studies here at Brookings.

City Cruises provides a blend of beautiful sunset vistas, dining options, and entertainment, enhancing the overall experience. In 1892, seventeen-year-old Thomas Crowley launched the first of many companies which would one day be a fixture of the San Francisco Bay. Using $80 he had saved, he purchased a used Whitehall rowboat, and started a business supplying the ships at anchor in the Bay. His inaugural boat was just eighteen feet long and  five feet wide, and he rowed it alone through the waters of the Bay transporting both goods and passengers at a time when no bridges connected the city to the other parts of the Bay.

Choose from a variety of ways to take a sunset cruise; Private Sail, Motor Yacht charter or a public sails. Popular options include an intimate private charter on the charming, all wood Grand Banks, Cimba. Or getting a fun group together and come aboard a classic tall ship like the Schooner Freda B.

For an hour and a half, you'll be treated to fantastic views of Alcatraz Island, the city skyline and the Golden Gate Bridge. Cruise into the sunset while the lights of the Bay Bridge twinkle in the night. Enjoy the life aquatic along the Marin Headlands and under the magnificent Golden Gate Bridge. The schooner is located in beautiful downtown Sausalito in the historic Sausalito Yacht Harbor, Slip 465. With a harbor surrounded by municipal parking and public transportation, this yacht is the easiest to board in the county. Yes, many cruises offer dining options, ranging from snacks to full meals.

SF Bay Adventures offers our guests a variety of ways to catch amazing views from the vantage point of the water. Watch as the sunset become twilight to the west while the moon slowly rises in the east. If your tour is in the winter, you will see the sights of downtown San Francisco on your way to the beautiful Bay Bridge. Marvel at the bridge up close before heading back to Fisherman's Wharf. If your tour is in spring, summer or fall, you will pass the Marin Headlands, Sausalito, and Tiburon. Sail past Angel Island State Park and slowly circle the infamous Island of Alcatraz before returning to Fisherman's Wharf, after watching the sun set over the Pacific on this relaxing California cruise.

After you finish dinner, you’ll want to stop by one of San Francisco’s famous comedy clubs. While not usually the first place that comes to mind when you think of stand-up comedy, the city has long been a fertile ground for the art — and these days, San Francisco is finally getting its due. A few great clubs you might want to check out include Cobb’s Comedy Club, The Setup San Francisco, Cheaper Than Therapy, Punch Line Comedy Club, and Best of SF Stand-Up Comedy. Sail along Nordfjord for a scenic maritime adventure that you will relish in. In North Cape, you can stand at the northernmost edge of the European continent.

The collection of sculptures in the park's middle section is particularly of note; only wander there if you're strong of heart, and don't bring the kiddos. Combining the chic with the classic, Arcadia offers a relaxed pace, stylish surroundings and more than a hint of extravagance. With her luminous glass-roofed SkyDome, on-board gin distillery and whole world of dining and entertainment on board. During the summer, you could also bring t-shirts, shorts, jeans and perhaps a light jacket and definitely some walking shoes so that you can explore all the magical sights. If you want an outfitter that truly knows Norway, go with the one that has been sailing there for more than a century—Hurtigruten. “Let it go” and just bring the whole family to experience the magic of Norway on a Disney Dream cruise.

Between the rugged terrains and the Viking history, these lands echo the promise of adventure. Hurtigruten is the king of Norway cruises, with at least one ship departing daily on its coastal route (the line is based in Norway). Most major cruise lines and many expedition lines also visit Norway; the notable exceptions are Carnival and Norwegian Cruise Line. You might find a Disney cruise to Norway (sometimes including Iceland), though they are few and far between. Some major cruise lines only offer a few departures, while others -- such as Celebrity Cruises, Fred. Olsen, Holland America, MSC Cruises and P&O Cruises -- provide multiple sail dates and itinerary options.

Norway's rocky coastline and deep spectacular fjords are some of the top sights to see on a cruise to the Scandinavian country. Plus, with several ports along the way such as Stavanger, Molde, Alesund, Oslo and Bergen, the shore excursion opportunities are endless. Whether you spend your day taking a walking tour from the Alesund port or pick up some goods and souvenirs on a market tour from Bergen, there's no shortage of ways to experience Norway. The food of Norway is very much of its surroundings; the mountains, rivers, ocean and raw materials available have shaped traditional Norwegian cuisine. Local meats, grains and vegetables are readily available along with some of the most incredible seafood.

Norway is famous for its fjords, the narrow, steep-sided inlets formed by retreating glaciers at the end of the Ice Age. Head to Geiranger to see Europe's highest fjord, or explore Molde's 12-mile fjord that winds through the archipelago. No matter how you choose to ford the fjords, you'll see why Norway is known for these natural wonders. Set off for the north to see the sparsely populated, mountainous country of Norway. Among the thousands of pristine lakes, isolated islands and stunning fjords, you'll feel like you've stepped back into the Ice Age.

Alaska Cruise Itineraries

Sometimes, you may find an occasional sailing from San Francisco or elsewhere; however, it is a longer itinerary or a repositioning cruise. There are other factors to consider when booking a cruise to Alaska, such as airfare, pre-cruise accommodations, and shore excursions. If you are worried about the cost, you may want to book an interior cabin. While you will not be able to wake up and look outside at the passing scenery, you will be able to enjoy all of the other amenities on the ship and have access to the same tours as everyone else onboard. With its roaring glaciers, rugged mountains and deep fjords, Glacier Bay National Park feels like a dream. With 3.3 million acres to explore, cruise to this world-renowned landmark — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — and let the landscapes inspire your next adventure.

The pool area, a true stunner, comes with comfortable padded loungers, a pool and whirlpools. Its retractable glass roof is perfect for cruises to Alaska when the weather is iffy. There were very few Carnival sailings available for under $750 per person, with most Carnival sailings starting around $800 per person or more for seven nights. The two-level complex also has upstairs nooks for playing Xbox, ping pong and foosball.

Alaska Mountains & National Parks

At first glance many mistake Victoria for an English coastal city or northern European town. Full of greenery, pubs and Victorian architecture, it's difficult to believe that this was a tent city full of rough and tumble miners just 150 years ago. On a cruise to Alaska, explore the Butchart Gardens, tour the pub scene and taste some of the local brews or sail the bay for a whale-watching adventure. Oceania Regatta has a capacity of 684 cruise passengers, providing a more intimate experience. Carnival Cruise Line offers two 14-day itineraries in 2024 on the Carnival Spirit, and both are budget-friendly. While most cruises to Alaska are typically seven days, there are options to sail longer.

At 119 square feet, these are relatively small, with a double bed and no room for a couch. Since cruise passengers require a shuttle to reach downtown, it’s a deterrent for some travelers. Elizabeth graduated from New York University's Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute with her M.A. Growing up, she had the privilege of traveling frequently with her family and fell in love with cruising after sailing on the Oasis of the Seas her freshman year of high school. She wanted to pursue a career that highlighted her passion for travel and strengths as a writer. Select itineraries will include stops at Icy Strait Point; Sitka; and Victoria, British Columbia.

You may want to see bears, witness a salmon run, travel during the warmest weeks, or have a chance to see the northern lights. Oceania Cruises offers a somewhat all-inclusive Alaska itinerary from Seattle. They’re suited for travelers who want the best and are willing to pay more for the premium experience.

Budget-Friendly Alaska Cruises From Seattle

The solo cabins in the studio zones are small (measuring 100 square feet) but are superbly designed to maximize storage space (something I learned firsthand staying in one on Norwegian Epic). It's yet one more stylish and upscale area for cruisers looking for an upgraded experience to retreat. Of particular note, given Alaska's weather, is that one of the two main pool areas on each of these Quantum-class ships is enclosed. Conveniently located an hour and a half from Anchorage, Whittier is a small town on the shore of the glacier-filled Prince William Sound. Named for the Northern compass point, Noordam is fitting for a cruise to Alaska. Museum-quality art outfits this ship, from oils to photographs of music legends.

By choosing an older vessel, you can stay within budget, although they lack the latest features on the newer ships. Smaller ships may provide relief on pricing, as they have fewer amenities. Booking an inside cabin is a great money-saving tip, and selecting a mid-ship stateroom helps prevent seasickness. The airport is located about thirty-minutes away from the cruise terminal in the heart of downtown. There are plenty of luxury accommodations within a five-minute drive of the port, Pan Pacific Vancouver, Rosewood Hotel Georgia, Sutton Place Hotel Vancouver, and the Shangri-La Vancouver. Still, unlike some lines that cater to an older crowd, Princess doesn't ignore the children's market.

See the best of the Great Land’s glaciers, coastal towns and wildlife on board perfectly sized ships offering superior service and exclusive programming. Explore the dynamic glaciers, soaring peaks and captivating history of the 49th state on our award-winning itineraries. Travel back in time and pan for gold like a prospector during the Gold Rush. Snuggle sled dog puppies in the ship's Piazza, or see the Northern Lights in the planetarium. At the Mt. McKinley Princess Wilderness Lodge, explore our treehouse and enjoy unmatched views of Denali.

Solo passengers on Norwegian Encore and Norwegian Bliss will also find a sometimes rollicking bar scene, with plenty of counter-style seating in bars that are a great place to meet other solo travelers and friendly guests. There, the bartender will muddle your mojitos with raspberry, guava, passion fruit or even jalapeno pepper to spice things up when you're sitting with your new solo friends. With the year just beginning, it's time to start thinking about booking a cruise vacation for 2024. This can be the perfect way to unwind and explore new places, all while traveling in style and comfort with Norwegian Cruise Line. One of Norwegian's ports that offers a variety of exciting cruise options is Seattle, Washington, located in America's Pacific Northwest.

From ship to shore, the best is at your fingertips on our Alaska cruises. With national parks and four of North America’s tallest mountains, Alaska’s wilderness has been preserved for generations. Denali National Park is larger than Vermont and home to the highest peak on the continent.

These naturalists are a wealth of information, and having such a person on board appeals to first-time Alaska cruisers. Some cruises visit Glacier Bay National Park, while others go to Hubbard Glacier. If you’re traveling to Alaska with family and seeking the best cruise line, you’ll want a ship with plenty of onboard activities. Newer and larger vessels have laser tag, racing cars, bumper cars, indoor sky diving, and water slides. If you select the reverse itinerary, you’ll fly to Anchorage, complete the land tour first, and cruise back afterward.

The Port also continues to work in partnership with cruise ports in Alaska, Victoria. And Vancouver BC and the cruise industry to explore the world’s first cruise-focused Green Corridor from Seattle to Alaska through innovative decarbonization strategies. If you plan to cruise this itinerary once, finding the perfect cruise may involve many factors.

Ultimate Wildlife Adventure cruisetour

Cold temperatures, icy waters and a long snowy season are not conducive to early spring and late fall cruises. Our Gold Magellan award-winning North to Alaska program brings local personalities, culture and Alaska seafood on board and on land to immerse you in the history and traditions of the 49th state. From savoring fresh Alaska seafood to meeting local celebrities, our North to Alaska program allows you to see, feel and taste the best of the Great Land. When it comes to the top Alaska destinations, adventure is around every corner. From Tongass National Forest to Glacier Bay National Park, here are the most popular Alaska destinations to explore on your next cruise or cruisetour vacation. Experience more of Alaska with an in-depth Alaska Cruisetour from Princess Cruises, featuring premium Inside Passage cruises paired with an extended land tour into Denali and the Alaskan wilderness.

Outdoor Adventures

Or listen to harrowing Tales from the Deadliest Catch fishermen and climbers who have summited Denali during your Alaska cruise. Alaska cruisetours combine our top-rated Voyage of the Glaciers cruise with three to ten nights on land exploring Denali National Park. Travel aboard our exclusive Direct-to-the-Wilderness® train and unwind at Princess Wilderness Lodges®. Every year Princess introduces more people to Denali National Park than any other cruise line. This buffet serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner everyday; however, the venue is not well laid-out in our experience.

One of the biggest reasons people visit

College Fjord is the meeting place where many of Alaska’s glaciers congregate and flow to the ocean. At the water’s edge are massive valley glaciers and dozens of smaller monuments that dot the mountainous region. Thanks to the professors who first settled here in 1899, many of these glaciers are named after the country’s best institutions of higher learning, such as Harvard Glacier. We had the opportunity to listen to Libby Riddles share her story and road to victory in the Iditarod race. One of the highlights of MedallionClass is OceanNow where you can order food and drinks anywhere on the ship. Whether you want to order a latte or cappuccino to your stateroom while you are scouting wildlife from your balcony or a pina colada while lounging in the solarium, you can do so through the app. We had a chance to dine at The Catch during our sailing and really enjoyed it.

North to Alaska

The Harriman Expedition discovered College Fjord in 1899 and named the towering glaciers after the great East Coast universities of the United States, like the Harvard Glacier. With the largest collection of tidewater glaciers in the world, your scenic Alaska cruise through the fjord will make a lasting memory. Another pro of sailing with Princess Cruises to Alaska is the MedallionClass experience that its ships offer. This technology is aimed at making your vacation more personalized and contactless. While most of our cruises have been roundtrip from Seattle or Vancouver, our recent Majestic Princess cruise was our first one-way sailing.

Alaska's capital city is interesting because no road leads from here to the rest of the state. It's located at the base of Mount Juneau, and you can only get there via boat or small plane — even residents have to bring their cars to Juneau via ferry. Home to Mendenhall Glacier, this is a popular port for hikes by, kayak tours to and helicopter landings on the glacier. Active travelers can explore Alaska by sea kayak or canoe, hike on glaciers and through rainforests, zip line, bike, ride an ATV and even snorkel (you'll need a dry suit).

Voyage of the Glaciers

These cruise lines, especially on their newer ships, offer something for everyone — as well as a higher caliber of onboard dining than on the cheapest cruises. You can also find one-way repositioning cruises between Southern California ports (Los Angeles and San Diego) and Vancouver at the beginning or end of a ship's Alaska cruise season. Generally, these one-way sailings travel from Seward or Whittier (the cruise ports closest to Anchorage) to Vancouver (or vice versa). Most itineraries are seven nights, but you'll find a handful that are longer.

The brand's commitment to showcasing the beauty of Alaska goes beyond dining and beverages. Every cruise itinerary includes at least one glacier-viewing experience, with Princess taking more guests to Glacier Bay National Park than any other cruise line. Cruises also visit marquee ports like Juneau, Ketchikan, and Skagway, with late-night calls in Juneau on select itineraries. Guests can choose from over 150 shore excursions, including unique experiences like lumberjack shows, dog sledding on glaciers, flightseeing adventures, and wildlife viewing tours to spot whales, bears, and more.

While Alaska’s natural sites are not necessarily moving around in the same way the animals do, the constantly changing weather means a lot is left up to chance. During our tour, we were part of the unlucky 70 percent of visitors who didn't get to see the mountain Denali since it was constantly shrouded in clouds. That said, we did see some fantastic scenery both during our land tour (especially the turquoise waters of the Kenai River) and from the ship, and I was blown away by Alaska’s dramatic and expansive landscapes. Hop a bus, kayak, boat or plane to look for bears, eagles, whales, sea otters and other wildlife.

If luxury is what you're after, you can find lines that will go overboard pampering you on your journey north. If you want a more active trip in less touristed areas, a great choice would be a small-ship expedition line, including Alaska specialists such as Alaskan Dream Cruises and UnCruise Adventures. Some of Skagway’s newest sled dogs come aboard with Puppies in the Piazza.

Finally, you'll find some round-trip San Francisco itineraries — usually 10 or 11 nights long — as well as longer sailings between San Francisco and Vancouver. One nice thing about the Inside Passage is how calm the water is because you're sailing between land masses. If you worry about seasickness, an Inside Passage trip is the best Alaska cruise itinerary versus a sailing where your ship transits rougher, open waters.
